Make Tracks Like Lewis and Clark
—The Last Portage with the Tent of Many Voices

March 7-10, 2006
Skamania County Fairgrounds, Stevenson Washington

200 years ago, the Great Cascades and Beacon Rock on the lower Columbia River became important as critical western benchmarks in the journey of Lewis and Clark. The Great Cascades stretched across the Columbia between the present day cities of Stevenson and Cascade Locks then west to what is now North Bonneville. These rapids were the last significant physical barrier to the Pacific. Only a few miles below the Cascades at Beacon Rock, Lewis recorded the first indication of a tidal surge meaning their journey across the country finally neared the Pacific Ocean.

In celebration of Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery, the City of Stevenson and the Skamania County Chamber of Commerce join with the National Parks Service, Skamania County Parks and Recreation, Chinook Nation, and others in presenting the Last Portage: Carrying Change, a 4 day presentation of the special National Park Service Lewis and Clark Historic Trail Exhibit, Corps II, The Tent of Many Voices.

The Tent of Many Voices gathers folklore, music, living and oral history, expedition journals and other presentations in a single 150-seat venue. The programs introduce people too the landscape of the time of the Corps of Discovery and the dramatic changes to the land, air, water and social lifestyle over the last 200 years.

The Skamania County Chamber of Commerce and their partners in the presentation expanded the offerings beyond the traveling Tent of Many Voices to create a multi—dimensional experience to those attending. These days will take you back to the times of Lewis and Clark, help you understand the rigors and difficulties they encountered paddling and walking across the North American continent. The experience of traveling beyond the “known” world into an uncharted and dangerous territory. The variety and depth of the presentations offer more than one view of the journey. The views of the Corps. The views of the natives they encountered. And the views of those who traveled later in their foot steps.

Join us for this current day Journey of Discovery.
